When a new car makes sense

Gig drivers put miles on a car three to four times faster than a typical commuter. At that pace, the difference between 22 MPG and 45 MPG can be worth well over $1,000 a year in gas alone. Add lower repair bills from a newer car and the savings can cover a big part of the switch.

Counting the real cost of switching

For "extra cost of switching," use the price of the new car minus what you'd get for your current one, plus fees and taxes. If you'd be financing, the interest is part of the cost too. A higher car payment with no money saved isn't an upgrade.

Hybrids are popular for a reason

Hybrids shine in stop-and-go delivery driving, where they often beat their highway MPG. Used hybrids with good maintenance records are a common choice for full-time drivers. If you're considering an electric car instead, try the EV vs gas calculator.

Don't forget the risk

A big purchase only pays off if you keep driving. If gig work is temporary for you, a shorter payback period, under 18 months, is a safer target.
